A New Crew
Working out in India placed me in the company of two Australians: Michael Slater brought all his Channel Nine exuberance and Matthew Hayden, who I had not met before, was the most generous of colleagues. He’s into yoga and cooking. Look at the size of him. A body double of Giant Haystacks into all that meditation stuff.
Hayden is someone whose reputation went before him as a player. I had always viewed him as a big bruiser and everyone I came into contact with seemed to be a bit wary of him. But he proved himself to be a real team player, not least late at night when he would invite people back to his hotel room for a nightcap. As his abode had patio doors that opened onto a nice garden, he insisted on playing host, and we would all share a glass of wine or two before bed.
It was a rather cosmopolitan crew that was pitched together to commentate on the tournament and I must say one of the number, Danny Morrison, is tailor-made for IPL. They absolutely love him out there. He’s a great combination – off the wall and a bloody good broadcaster. It’s great that he’s found himself a niche. He is so different to anyone else. He’s a commentary-box hippy: ‘Hey, man, how’s it going?’ Peace brother. I half-expected him to give us a rendition of Scott McKenzie’s ‘San Francisco’.
It was also good to work with a number of women. Isa Guha, who works with us at Sky, is carving out a great career as a British broadcaster and she is making a good impression around the world with her interviews and presentations. Mel Jones, of Australia, is right up there too. Another Australian, Lisa Sthalekar, is different again, as she has a softer voice, and from an English point of view it’s great to see Alison Mitchell, a very accomplished broadcaster, branching out and doing all sorts of things. Covering men’s cricket on TV is pretty new to most of them, but they have quickly proved themselves in what unfortunately has been a male-dominated area for so long.
